The Meade County commission took several road- and highway-related actions at its meeting, including approving a section-line vacation, authorizing negotiations on a potential highway operations site, and approving the annual magnesium chloride and base-stabilization treatment lists.
A public hearing to vacate a 66-foot portion of a section-line right-of-way that duplicates existing Ralph’s Way was presented by the planning director. Staff explained Ralph’s Way provides the dedicated alternative access; after public questions from nearby landowners and commission discussion about emergency access, a commissioner moved to approve the vacation and the board carried the electronic vote 5–0.
Earlier in public comment, landowner Larry Everd raised concerns about Elk Creek Road and said the county was planning an additional alignment across his property; staff advised limiting discussion where litigation or eminent-domain proceedings may be involved.
Highway Superintendent Troy Eastman presented standard traffic-count updates and proposed acquisition of land near Elk Creek Road to create a satellite operations site for equipment, fuel and material storage. Commissioners authorized the highway superintendent and liaisons to enter negotiations (subject to final board approval of any purchase agreement) to improve operational efficiency.
The board also reviewed and approved the county’s magnesium chloride and base-stabilization program lists, a routine seasonal treatment plan. Staff noted actual material application rates can vary by road conditions and that some residential-paid applications are handled directly through the contractor. A motion to approve the mag-chloride and base-stabilization lists carried.
Why it matters: Vacating the section line regularizes access and emergency routes for the Bloxburg area; negotiating a nearby operations site could shorten maintenance response times and reduce hauling costs; magnesium chloride approvals authorize seasonal treatments on county roads.
Next steps: The highway superintendent will return to the board with any final purchase agreement for land acquisition; mag and base-stabilization work will proceed per the approved lists and contractor arrangements.
