During the Committee of the Whole’s FY2025 review, councilors emphasized the need for a detailed presentation from the Taunton Public Schools on the district’s FY2025 request. Finance presenters and councilors noted that school-related fixed costs are a major driver of the municipal budget and that the administration’s proposal includes more than $7 million in increased funding for schools.
Councilor requests resulted in a formal invitation motion: councilors voted to invite Superintendent Cabral and the school committee to appear for a full presentation and to allow the council to review net school spending and capital requests in more detail. The administration acknowledged that the school committee was holding a concurrent budget workshop but agreed to schedule a council presentation.
The Committee of the Whole did not change the school appropriation at the meeting. The invitation is meant to provide greater transparency and give councilors an opportunity for deeper scrutiny before final votes during the municipal budget process.
