The State Board celebrated two recognition programs: National Blue Ribbon Schools and Maryland’s inaugural Purple Star Schools — the latter with Governor Wes Moore in attendance.
Dr. Wright introduced six Blue Ribbon schools selected by MSDE’s Division of Assessment, Accountability and Performance Reporting for high performance or closing achievement gaps. Principals and district leaders highlighted school improvements, demographic context and programs that contributed to outcomes.
Governor Wes Moore and military representatives joined the board to present the Purple Star designations. Purple Star Schools offer coordinated supports for military‑connected students — peer programs, checklists for new enrollees, transition kits and trained liaisons — to reduce disruption from frequent moves. Colonel Sapp and Captain Doug Burfield described the stresses military children face and praised Maryland’s program for easing transitions and supporting mission readiness for service members.
Representatives from the eight Purple Star recipients came forward for recognition and photo opportunities with the governor and board. Board members thanked the teams and urged continued attention to supports for military families and for the arts and mental‑health work featured elsewhere on the agenda.
