New Kent board approves earlier school-year start; 2025–26 and 2026–27 calendars adopted

The New Kent County Public Schools board voted to approve revised school calendars that move the 2025–26 start date two weeks prior to Labor Day, putting the 2025–26 first day of school on Aug. 18. The board also considered and approved the 2026–27 calendar in the same action after an amendment to add that year for consideration.

"So that is the calendar that, the committee came up with that was recommended," Mr. Hockman told the board, explaining the committee’s work and the calendar details. He noted the proposed change was driven in part by athletics and alignment with regional partner programs: "Going earlier is beneficial because fall sports starts so early... all of our regional programs ... start 2 weeks pre Labor Day." The calendar keeps standard breaks (a week at Thanksgiving, two weeks at winter break and a one-week spring break) and includes professional-development half-days spread throughout the year.

Board members asked whether the vote before them covered one or both school years; staff clarified the board could approve 2025–26 alone or also approve 2026–27 the same night. A motion to amend the action item to include the 2026–27 calendar was made and seconded, and the board polled on the motion before taking the final vote.

When the clerk polled the board on the revised calendar approval, members recorded unanimous 'Aye' votes and the motion carried. The board also approved a separate change to the board’s own meeting calendar (moving the February work session to Feb. 19).

District staff emphasized that the earlier start aligns New Kent with regional programs (Bridging Communities and other partners) and eases transportation and scheduling for students enrolled in those programs. The change is administrative and operational; no adjustments to instructional minutes were reported other than the reallocated professional-development schedule.

The board approved the calendars by recorded poll votes during the meeting and the calendars will be posted as the official schedule for the coming school years.
