Derek Moss, who led Summit County's recent drive‑through vaccine week, told the Board of Health that the county administered "just under 500 vaccines" across three pilot sites in October and plans to expand the model for 2024.
Moss said the pilot leveraged parking at schools during fall break and combined flu and COVID vaccine offerings to simplify outreach. He reported that clinics in Camas, Colville and Park City each produced strong turnout and helped free up in‑clinic appointment slots. On the county’s internal tally he noted totals per site and told board members his planning goal for next year is Oct. 1–3, with improved venue selection and earlier communication to increase participation.
Board members discussed appointment strategies; Moss recommended appointments but said walk‑ins were accepted if capacity allowed. He also said the health department retains sufficient vaccine inventory (Moderna and Novavax), including pediatric formulations, and that the department will continue standard clinic operations while staging drive‑through events.
Staff said the drive‑through approach appears to increase convenience for residents who otherwise might not seek vaccination; Moss estimated roughly one‑third of attendees would not have been vaccinated without the drive‑through option. The department will refine messaging and logistics ahead of next year’s campaign and work with the communications team to post results publicly.
