The Summit County Board of Health held nominations and a voice vote for board officers during the January work session. Chris Cherniak opened the floor and was nominated and seconded; the board then voted by voice to select Cherniak as chair for the 12‑month term.
Chris Cherniak spoke briefly about the responsibilities, saying the chair typically runs meetings and meets with staff to set agendas. Ryan Stack, county legal counsel, advised the board that the secretary position was not noticed on the agenda and recommended the board defer selection of a secretary to the next meeting while proceeding with chair and vice‑chair appointments.
Heidi Gordon was nominated for vice chair and accepted the nomination. The board approved her selection by voice vote. The board discussed, and agreed to, placing the secretary selection on the next meeting agenda because staff normally takes minutes and the board currently uses a staff member to memorialize meetings.
No formal changes to bylaws or code were adopted; legal counsel instructed the board on allowable procedures and the board agreed to follow counsel’s guidance about noticing and timing for any officer selection not on today’s agenda.
The board recorded the officer selections as part of the meeting minutes and moved on to the remainder of the agenda.
