The Summit County Council voted to approve the Restaurant Tax Advisory Committee's 2024 grant recommendations after the committee described its review process and funding constraints.
Eric Ratcher, the committee secretary, told council members the committee received 55 applications requesting approximately $5.3 million while about $4.1 million in restaurant-tax funds were available for distribution this cycle. The committee held two days of interviews and a deliberation day to select awards and reduce or decline applicants whose proposals did not meet the grant criteria.
Ratcher said some applications were not funded because they did not align with the grant's goals of generating restaurant and hotel tax revenue through events or tourism-related activities. He gave examples: a request to buy treadmills for a recreation center and another to buy gift cards for a school fundraiser were deemed outside the committee's criteria.
Council members praised the committee's process and noted efforts to fund organizations across the county; one councilor asked about co-branding priorities and whether the committee awards extra points for joint branding, which Ratcher confirmed the committee does consider. Ratcher said the awards left about $1,000 unallocated after distributions.
A council member moved to approve the committee's recommendations "as contained in the packet"; the council voted by voice in favor with no recorded opposition. The motion formally adopts the committee's funding decisions for the cycle.
The committee and council did not identify project-specific award amounts for each recipient in the meeting dialogue; the packet contains the detailed allocations.
