The Summit County Council voted Thursday to approve short extensions to first-amendment interlocal cooperation agreements with Park City Fire Service District to ensure uninterrupted ambulance service in county districts through Dec. 31, 2023. The extensions bridge the period before new interlocal agreements are scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, 2024.
County staff told the council the first amendments were intentionally one-year extensions that expire Nov. 2 and that the new interlocal agreements negotiated earlier this year take effect at the start of 2024, leaving a coverage gap the extensions aim to close. County legal staff confirmed the recommended extensions simply maintain the status quo until the new agreements are operational.
Council members made and seconded three separate motions to extend the first amendment for (1) North Summit ambulance service, (2) South Summit ambulance service, and (3) Park City ambulance service. Each motion was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote with the chair calling for “all in favor, say aye.”
Council members thanked Park City Fire for continuing to provide countywide ambulance coverage during the transition and noted that the agreements for other fire districts will convert service delivery when the new ILAs take effect. No member requested amendments to the extension terms at the county-level vote.
The approved extensions were presented as limited-duration measures to avoid a lapse in emergency medical services while the county and partner districts finish implementing the countywide EMS arrangements already negotiated earlier this year.
