Summit County approves disposition of unclaimed and seized property from sheriff’s evidence

The Summit County Council voted July 12 to approve a staff list of unclaimed and seized property in the possession of the Sheriff’s Office, authorizing disposition consistent with the staff report dated 07/12/2023.

Sheriff’s Office staff explained the department’s 90‑day outreach protocol for owners and said items with no claimants are offered for conversion to county use or donation to vetted charities. Presentation materials included many bicycles intended for a planned bike‑rodeo for underserved youth, electronics that could be donated to local education foundations, and tools for inmate work crews. The sheriff’s representative said the department had previously sold items and placed proceeds into county funds but staff now prefer donation where feasible and noted the heavy administrative burden of cataloging and outreach.

Council questioned whether firearms and other items tied to crimes should be sold; Sheriff’s Office staff argued firearms used in crimes should be destroyed rather than re‑sold, and suggested donation of non‑crime items to community groups after county‑attorney review. The council moved to approve the disposition list as contained in the staff packet dated 07/12/2023; the motion carried unanimously.
