County hears CDBG applicants including fire district engine and water‑meter projects; public hearing opens and closes

Summit County opened a public hearing Jan. 11 for ideas eligible under the State of Utah’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Small Cities program and heard several applicants seeking county sponsorship.

Mountain Mediation Center asked council to consider funding eviction‑prevention mediation services, warning that federal emergency rental assistance will soon end. The center urged county support for mediation to reduce the risk of unhoused residents.

Chief Nelson of the local fire district described aging apparatus problems and requested assistance to apply for $450,000 to buy a type 4/5 engine better suited to steep, narrow and unpaved access routes; the chief said recent mechanical failures and the transition from volunteer to career staffing made new apparatus an urgent need.

Leaders of Warnship Water Company outlined a phased water‑system replacement plan and requested approximately $346,000 to replace about 60 meters and associated assemblies in their system as a first step toward long‑term sustainability; they described antiquated galvanized piping, undocumented meters and limited storage capacity.

Staff noted the CDBG application deadline (Jan. 31) and said county staff can sponsor and shepherd eligible applications. Council suggested applicants also explore other funding sources and break larger projects into phased applications where appropriate. The public hearing was closed after the ideas were recorded; no final county sponsorship votes were recorded on Jan. 11.
