Middletown supervisors adopt proclamations for Fire Prevention Month, Energy Efficiency Day and Spina Bifida Awareness

The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors read and adopted three proclamations at its Oct. 3 meeting.

A proclamation recognizing Fire Prevention Month (proclaimed Oct. 3, 2022) cited U.S. figures presented to the board: more than 3,500 home fire deaths annually and more than 360,000 home fire responses each year, and urged installation of working smoke alarms (including devices that meet the needs of people who are deaf or hard of hearing) and monthly testing.

A second proclamation recognized National Energy Efficiency Day (the first Wednesday in October). The board’s statement said energy efficiency is a cost-effective way to reduce pollution and utility bills — citing a claimed household savings of up to $500 from appliance-efficiency standards — and encouraged residents and businesses to pursue energy‑saving measures.

A third proclamation designated October 2022 as Spina Bifida Awareness Month and summarized prevalence and prevention information presented to the board, including a U.S. estimate of about 1,500 affected births annually and a Pennsylvania estimate of about 4,000 people living with spina bifida.

The chair publicly thanked James Henderson of the Human Relations Commission for raising the spina bifida awareness issue and urged community participation in related events; no formal votes beyond reading and proclaiming were recorded for these items.
