Rising Sun removes budget from tonight’s agenda and schedules special budget hearing for June 23

At the start of its June 20 meeting, the Rising Sun Board of Commissioners voted to amend the agenda to remove the budget items scheduled for discussion and to hold a special budget hearing on June 23, 2021 at 7 p.m.

Town Administrator (Speaker 1) told the board staff were still fine-tuning budget items and did not feel comfortable presenting them for adoption that night. The administrator asked the board to remove the budget portions of the agenda and to schedule the hearing for June 23 so staff could resolve outstanding items.

The mayor (Speaker 2) called for a motion to amend the agenda; members moved and seconded the amendment and approved it by voice vote. A separate motion to schedule the special budget hearing for 06/23/21 at 7 p.m. was moved by Speaker 5, seconded by Speaker 2, and approved by voice vote.

Why it matters: scheduling a dedicated hearing gives staff additional time to compile and verify budget figures and allows the board to consider the FY22 budget with more complete information.

Next steps: Staff indicated they expect to provide finalized budget numbers at the June 23 hearing; the council treasurer (Speaker 3) said he would try to have budget numbers ready for that meeting.
