Town administrator warns of rising development interest and property maintenance issues

Town Administrator Tom told the commission on Aug. 10 that the town is seeing renewed development interest and that staff are spending significant time meeting with developers. He named several developers expressing interest and said staff are enforcing land‑development processes more stringently, which has provoked concern among some residents and developers.

Tom also raised property‑maintenance problems in some neighborhoods, including relatively new developments (about 20–25 years old) where houses are appearing run down. He warned residents that performing work without permits can jeopardize insurance coverage and affect property values, and encouraged anyone struggling to contact town staff for assistance or referral to local organizations. He reiterated that building permits exist primarily for safety and long‑term property‑value protection, not as a revenue source for the town.

The administrator framed enforcement as a mix of assistance and compliance: the town will work with residents to resolve issues, but code requirements (including barriers around pools and other child safety measures) must be met to reduce risk. No formal policy change or enforcement action was voted at the meeting; the remarks were presented as an update and advisory to residents.
