Rising Sun announces spring cleanup, traffic enforcement plan and park improvements

The mayor and commissioners highlighted a series of community events and small projects at the March meeting.

Mayor said the town’s spring dumpster day will be moved to the third Saturday in April (April 16) and that a reminder will be included in the next water bill mailing. He congratulated local wrestling state champion Tyler Garvin and recognized Dr. Joe Weidner for 20 years in town and for being named Maryland State Physician of the Year. The mayor also said he will write testimony in support of removing a sunset provision in Senate Bill 362 (highway user fees) and encouraged continued engagement on state funding for local roads.

Commissioner Pearson outlined a "don't block the box" initiative to address vehicles blocking the West Main/South Queen intersection: the plan will include a painted blue box, signage, camera enforcement and escalating fines for repeat offenders. Pearson said the program is coming and will be publicized.

Commissioner Warnec described an Eagle Scout project to move a trail in Veterans Park further from a stream and to connect it to a nearby bridge; he also said new locks were installed at the dog park. Other commissioners offered short reports or none.

What happens next: The town will publicize the dumpster day reschedule, begin planning traffic enforcement details and coordinate public works support for the park project.
