Rising Sun authorizes purchase of church at 19 East Main Street for $145,000

Rising Sun’s board approved Resolution 2022‑17 authorizing the town to purchase the property at 19 East Main Street for $145,000 and authorizing Town Administrator Calvin J. Bonenberger Jr. to execute documents to complete the purchase.

Town Administrator told the board the town entered settlement on Sept. 7 after the offer was accepted. Officials described the building as in need of significant improvements, including roof repairs and mold remediation. The town said it is obtaining cost estimates for a new or repaired roof, gutting the basement to the studs to address mold and mildew, and running a water line large enough to support a fire-sprinkler system required for future uses.

Commissioners indicated they may pursue state grants or other funding to help rehabilitate the building to support community reuse. The motion to approve Resolution 2022‑17 was moved, seconded and passed; the transcript records a voice vote of 'Aye' but does not report roll-call totals.
