Rising Sun to cut regular meetings to once a month; Oct. 11 canceled, annexation hearing set for Oct. 18

Rising Sun officials announced a plan to reduce regular meetings from two per month to one and canceled the scheduled Oct. 11 meeting.

At the Sept. 27 session, a commissioner said the town is 'leaning towards 1 meeting per month' and staff will reserve the right to call special meetings with adequate notice. The body asked town staff member Calvin to prepare an ordinance or resolution to reconcile meeting frequency and clarify Zoom‑meeting authority with the town charter.

Officials also confirmed a combined meeting and public hearing on an annexation resolution for Oct. 18, and said the next regular meeting would be Oct. 25. Town administrator staff noted the Oct. 11 meeting cancellation worked from a staff scheduling standpoint.

Why it matters: reducing the cadence of regular meetings shortens the town’s formal decision calendar and shifts routine business, public hearings and committee interaction to fewer dates; commissioners said they would retain the ability to call extra meetings when necessary.

The town attorney said the annexation process already begun is being advertised; residents can expect notices ahead of the Oct. 18 hearing. The council did not take a formal vote at the Sept. 27 meeting to change the charter; staff will return with proposed language for the body to consider.

The meeting adjourned after the scheduling items were handled.
