Rising Sun police report shows lower 2022 call volume; town awarded roughly $500,000 speed-camera grant

The police chief reported to the Town of Rising Sun Mayor and Commissioners on Jan. 10 that the department responded to 2,820 calls for service in 2022, which he described as lower than in past years because the department was understaffed for roughly half of 2022. "For the year of 2022, we responded to 2,820 calls for service," the chief said.

He enumerated other department activity: "199 written reports, a 30 arrests, 5 DUIs, and 40 drug arrests," and said officers removed 66 illegally parked or abandoned vehicles from roadways. The chief told the board reduced staffing meant the department covered fewer hours—down from nearly 20 hours a day to about 16 at times—contributing to lower totals.

On traffic enforcement funding, the chief said the town participated with other county agencies in a speed-camera grant award. "We did receive that. I believe the total award was in the neighborhood of $500,000 and I think it's going to benefit us tremendously with the technology that it's going to have," he said. He described the project as a multi-agency effort but did not provide a detailed grant agreement or implementation timetable during the meeting.

The chief offered no new personnel commitments during the report. No board action followed the presentation; the chief concluded by asking if there were any questions, and the meeting moved on to administrative updates.
