The Crockett City Council moved to adopt the city’s FY2024 budget and later approved the 2023 tax roll.
City staff told the council the proposed budget and the proposed tax rate were posted for public inspection; staff explained that adopting the budget is tied to a tax‑rate decision and that maintaining last year’s tax rate would produce roughly $51,000 in new revenue for the city. Staff also noted that a 3% increase in the garbage rate was part of revenue planning for the coming year. "Our voter approval rate would have brought in right close to another 50,000 dollars 48,000, I believe," staff said, and when discussing the garbage line added the garbage rate "to be passed on right at 3%... exactly 3%."
A councilmember moved to approve the appropriation ordinance adopting the annual budget for fiscal year 2023–24; after a second the motion carried. Later the council approved the 2023 tax roll by motion and voice vote.
Staff provided context on the city’s indebtedness, noting three outstanding notes including a TxDOT/state infrastructure bank note for a roughly $6,000,000 project that funds new water lines and roads, and a Texas Water Development Board note of about $1.7 million. Staff said one refunding/general obligation will fall off the books next year, lowering debt service later.
The council closed the public hearing on the budget after hearing from staff and public commenters and then proceeded through subsequent agenda actions tied to tax rate and tax roll procedures.
