The Crockett Police Department and the city's Fire/EMS officials briefed the city council on January public-safety activity during the Feb. 6 meeting.
Police Chief (Speaker 8) said the department had 15 officers who worked 2,348 hours and responded to 502 calls for service in January; the chief reported 15 traffic accidents, 54 arrests, 261 traffic citations and 87 reports. He warned council members about a recent spike in scam calls, including at least one incident in which a resident sent $800 after receiving a call claiming a child had been kidnapped.
Chief 8 also presented the department's annual racial-profiling report as required by the state. The chief read: African American stops 347 males and 212 females (total 559); Asian/Pacific Islander stops 21 males and 10 females (total 31); Hispanic stops 229 males and 92 females (total 321); Native American stops 2 males and 1 female (total 3). The transcript’s figures for 'White' stops and some totals were unclear in the record; the department’s written report should be consulted for official counts.
Fire/EMS (Speaker 9) reported 45 calls in January (35 inside the city and 10 in the county response area for February, per the report), one city structure fire saved the structure, and two civilian fatalities were noted in recent incidents. Fire/EMS offered to provide a further breakdown on request.
Why it matters: The racial-profiling report is a state-required transparency measure; the surge in scam calls is an operational concern for resident safety. The council thanked first responders for their work and did not take immediate policy action during the presentation.
What’s next: Staff offered to provide written reports and further details on both the racial-profiling numbers and the recent incidents.
