Mimsies Barbecue seeks crosswalk; Council approves business‑funded signs

Owners of Mimsies Barbecue asked the council to allow signage and a painted crosswalk at 1979 South Hill Street after purchasing a neighboring parcel for overflow parking and an outdoor picnic area. The mayor said the city could install the signs or the business could pay for supplies; signs were estimated at about $150 each and a moderate amount of paint would be required.

Council debated whether the city should subsidize the work through economic‑development assistance or require the business to bear the cost. One council member noted the city has helped businesses in the past but emphasized that pedestrian safety is a public‑safety matter. After discussion, a motion that the business pay for the supplies and the city install the crosswalk was recorded as carrying 3–2.

Council did not order a permanent traffic‑calming change nor did it reduce speed limits as part of the action; the approval covered signage and a painted crossing only. Staff will coordinate installation if the business supplies the materials.
