Crockett sets 10 mph inside David Crockett Memorial Park, 25 mph on approaches

Crockett city council voted to post new speed limits at David Crockett Memorial Park to address concerns about child safety and increased traffic as park facilities are improved.

City staff recommended lowering speeds along the interior road that runs between softball and baseball fields to 10 miles per hour and setting approach roads at 25 miles per hour; staff said many park users and parked vehicles create hazards with children crossing between concession stands and fields. "Our recommendation are, along the softball route ... that it be dropped to 10 miles," a staff member said during the presentation.

Council discussed uniformity across park roads, the effect of past road repairs on vehicle speeds, and possible alternative traffic-calming measures. A motion to set the interior park speed at 10 mph with 25 mph approaching the park was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.

Staff will post signs and implement the change; council said the measure is intended to reduce the risk to children and pedestrians as park use increases and new pool facilities open.
