Library director highlights lifelong‑reading research and plans for 24/7 hold lockers in Lincoln

Catherine Hunt, Director of Library Services, presented research and local program updates showing the benefits of broad access to books and lifelong reading for youth and adults. Hunt cited studies correlating home‑library size with later educational attainment and noted the library's role providing access and programming. She told council the library holds "over 36,000 physical books just for youth" and has more than 100,000 items for all ages plus large digital collections.

Hunt announced the library has entered into a contract for 24/7 hold lockers (described as Amazon‑style) and expects installations at the 12 Bridges location and the community center in the fall to expand access in neighborhoods with limited vehicle access. She also described outreach programs (Read With Me Baby Literacy Kits, Read Across Lincoln distributing more than 700 books to first graders, summer reading programs offering up to six books per youth and family literacy services).

Council members praised the initiatives and asked follow‑up questions about programs such as Read to a Dog and adult summer reading participation; Hunt said the adult program typically attracts a couple of hundred participants. No action required; staff will proceed with the contracted lockers and follow up on program metrics.
