Michelle Hutchison was elected chair of the City of Lincoln Planning Commission on Feb. 21, and Peter Gilbert was elected vice chair after nominations and a roll-call vote. The commission conducted a formal nomination and voting process before confirming the leadership change.
The meeting began with a motion to rotate the chair position; members moved and seconded the motion to make Michelle Hutchison chair, and the motion carried by voice vote. Later the commission opened nominations for vice chair. Commissioner Kelly nominated Peter Gilbert, and another commissioner nominated John Reedy. Commissioners debated whether continuity would be affected if nominees later ran for city council, noting that vice chairs typically rotate into the chair role the following year.
During the roll-call vote both candidates initially received votes. John Reedy later indicated acceptance of his nomination but, after a tied result, changed his vote to Peter Gilbert, and the commission recorded a unanimous election of Peter Gilbert as vice chair. Commissioners emphasized the importance of experienced leadership during upcoming personnel changes.
The leadership votes were procedural, following standard commission practice for nominations and roll-call voting. The commission proceeded with its agenda after the two leadership positions were confirmed, and the new chair and vice chair presided over the remainder of the meeting.
