Residents press Middletown board on stop-sign placement and shortened bypass light

Two residents raised traffic-safety concerns during public comment at the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors meeting.

Elaine Miles told the board the traffic signal at the bypass (described as the '04:13' location) has been shortened to about 30 seconds, allowing only two vehicles to clear the intersection before it turns red. Staff asked Ms. Miles to speak into the microphone and said they would look into the timing.

Cheryl Jones said she learned only recently that a stop sign was to be installed at the end of her sidewalk on Parkview and said she parks near that location. "It's illegal to park at a stop sign," Jones said, adding that drivers must be 30 feet away. Jones asked whether a study supported installing just one stop sign on a block with multiple side streets.

A traffic commission representative explained that because Parkview already had a stop sign in one direction, the police and traffic commission recommended converting the intersection to an all-way stop to conform with Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code practices for intersection control. The board said the public works director will contact Ms. Jones later that week to discuss the timing and exact placement of the sign.

Board members acknowledged resident concerns and asked staff to follow up with the police chief and public works to confirm enforcement, placement and whether parking regulations or placement adjustments could be addressed in the short term.
