The Clear Lake City Council on March 2 proclaimed March 2023 as March for Meals Month and recognized the local senior center’s Meals on Wheels program during its presentations segment.
Mayor Perdock read the proclamation noting the program’s national roots in the Older Americans Act and the Meals on Wheels Association’s March for Meals campaign. Senior-center representatives described the center’s menu, outreach and funding challenges, noting that volunteer drivers provide not only meals but welfare checks for homebound seniors.
The senior center’s president encouraged donations and promoted a March 25 fundraiser (tickets priced at $40) and an online donation option. She described a ‘‘Paws’’ program to help seniors feed and care for their pets, and said the center had relied on local Rotary and other support as pandemic funding tapered.
Council members thanked senior center staff and urged residents to participate in March for Meals events and to consider volunteering. Council member Overton and others noted recent ARPA assistance to senior centers and invited the public to try the center’s buffet-style meals and volunteer routes to better understand operations.
The proclamation was presented to the senior-center representatives during the council meeting; council members asked staff to publicize upcoming meals and fundraising events.
