Clearlake planning commission continues Burns Valley sports complex item to Sept. 13

The Clearlake Planning Commission on Aug. 23 formally continued the Burns Valley development item to Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, at 6 p.m. to allow additional time for tribal consultation on the draft mitigated negative declaration.

Staff told commissioners the apartment portion of the larger Burns Valley project is statutorily exempt from CEQA under state law, but the sports complex (ball fields and associated parking and circulation) required public review of a draft mitigated negative declaration. One tribe requested more time to meet with staff and submit comments; staff recommended a two-week extension of the comment period and the commission formally continued the item to preserve public notice requirements.

Commissioner Williams moved to continue the matter; Commissioner Stewart seconded the motion and it passed by roll call. No public comment was offered on the item at the Aug. 23 hearing.

Staff also reported at the meeting that the city had been awarded $3,000,000 from State Parks toward the Burns Valley Sports Complex project, bringing funding to approximately $8 million for that segment of the development, though final project budgets and timelines were not detailed at the hearing.

The continuation preserves the administrative record and allows staff to return the matter on Sept. 13 with any tribal comments and any recommended revisions to the environmental or project documents.
