During the EDA meeting several residents raised concerns about local mail service and recycling availability.
Multiple speakers said mail routing and delivery have changed: some deliveries are being routed through Richmond rather than Hampton, there is no dedicated postal carrier for some routes, deliveries sometimes arrive late at night and may occur every two to three days. One speaker said they had experienced lost checks and contacted congressional offices about the problem. Staff acknowledged the broader routing changes and noted other jurisdictions are experiencing similar issues.
Separately, residents and one board speaker discussed the recent removal of a public recycling dumpster. Speakers described repeated contamination with nonrecyclables (cardboard with plastic, car parts, yard waste) and said apartment residents often lack access to recycling; staff said contamination causes the dumpster to be unusable and that Public Works is considering more structured, material-specific drop-off points to reduce contamination.
Other community updates included market interest in the former Wells Fargo building, a permitted Starbucks parcel still available by right, and a private storage facility tentatively opening in July; those economic-development updates were reported by staff and not acted on during the meeting.
The meeting adjourned after these items and staff noted the board will reconvene in March.
