Commission appoints Matt Peters to sick pool committee and discusses audit of sheriff finances

The commission handled a personnel appointment and debated an internal audit request during the meeting.

A vacancy on the sick pool committee (following Scott Tyrell's departure from the sheriff's department) was announced and Speaker 4 proposed Chief Deputy Matt Peters to fill the vacancy. A motion to appoint Peters was made, seconded and approved by voice vote.

Separately, commissioners discussed seeking an external audit of sheriff‑department finances. A commissioner said he had located a potential auditor in Wichita to review financial activity from Jan. 12 back one year and suggested soliciting a second firm for a fresh review. The discussion noted that the routine county audit may have not covered certain transactional details (credit cards, receipts, evidence funds) and commissioners asked staff to get contact information and follow up with the auditor and with sheriff's office leadership about scope and timing.

No final contract was approved for an audit; commissioners asked staff to share the audit contact information and to return with more details and costs.
