Needles council endorses state bills on overdose-response teams and mental-health courts; county officials describe fentanyl response efforts

The council approved letters of support for two state measures: Assembly Bill 462, which would create pilot overdose-response teams, and Senate Bill 63, which would establish or expand grant programs to develop homeless and mental‑health courts and related services.

County representatives described a local pilot that dispatches specialized detectives to investigate overdose deaths to determine suppliers and pursue criminal cases in some instances. They also discussed the county's work to deploy naloxone (Narcan) to correctional facilities and patrol deputies and noted efforts to assess broader public availability.

Council members asked technical questions about the bills and Narcan distribution. Staff and county officials said the bills would provide grant opportunities and expand assistance to people with mental-health needs to reduce incarceration and provide longer-term treatment options. The council voted to approve letters supporting the measures.
