Martin County’s fiscal court voted April 15 to participate in a regional recreational trail grant application organized by the regional trail authority, which officials described as covering 18 counties.
The regional application seeks $750,000 for three counties; county officials said $250,000 of that would be earmarked for Martin County to examine potential trailheads, a fishing pier, kiosks and other trail-related amenities. The court approved the resolution and authorized submission of the county’s portion of the application by the stated application deadline.
Why it matters: County officials said the effort is intended to spur economic development and build infrastructure to capture adventure-tourism spending that has benefited nearby communities. Supporters in the meeting cited the Hatfield-McCoy trail system and communities that have seen multimillion-dollar local impacts after investing in trail infrastructure.
Discussion and next steps: Officials discussed forming a trail commission representing each district to guide local trail decisions and emphasized the need to move quickly because of an application deadline near May 1. A staff or judge-appointed representative will help coordinate county participation and follow up with the regional authority as the application proceeds.
A public staff member from U.S. Sen. Rand Paul’s office later invited interested officials to a First Frontier Trails meeting on April 25 and offered to add the court to the authority’s email list.
