The Allegany County Board of Education voted unanimously March 11 to adopt the 2025–26 academic calendar, a measure board members said balances state requirements, staff development needs and community feedback.
Doctor Bohn moved to approve the calendar as presented; Miss Lepley seconded and the motion passed on a voice vote.
The calendar sets the first day for students as Thursday, Aug. 27, 2025, and the last scheduled student day as Friday, June 5, 2026, excluding inclement-weather makeup days. The last scheduled teacher day is Monday, June 8, 2026. Thanksgiving and winter breaks were included as single-block breaks: Thanksgiving begins with a three-hour early dismissal Wednesday and extends through the following Monday; the winter break runs beginning Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025, through Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, as presented to the board. An Easter-period break was noted as Wednesday through Monday, April 6, 2026.
Doctor Caldwell, who presented the draft calendar, told the board the district built three inclement-weather makeup days into the calendar and listed them at the end of the school year; if the district exceeds those local closures it will use the district's virtual-learning plan via Schoology for continuity of instruction.
The presentation also called out the operational transition from Aspen to PowerSchool for student information; staff will receive about six hours of PowerSchool training early in the school year. Caldwell said the calendar includes time for required professional-development topics set by the Maryland State Department of Education and Maryland leadership training the district must deliver across the school year.
Board member Max Green commended the district for gathering school-level input and encouraged a future parent survey to broaden community feedback. "I was very pleased to learn that much of [the feedback] had already been gathered through those school-level surveys," Green said.
The board announcement that the calendar was posted for approval followed public comment and procedural business. Next procedural steps: the calendar is adopted as the district's official schedule for 2025–26; the district will publish the calendar on its website and proceed with the planned PowerSchool rollout and staff professional-development scheduling.
Meeting records show the motion passed unanimously; the transcript did not include a roll-call tally in the public record.
