Parks & Recreation (Speaker 7) reported that winter basketball programs involved multiple age groups and that the 7-8 boys team won the district championship and participated in the state tournament. Overall, staff said about 435 children participated in basketball across age groups this year.
Staff outlined spring plans: registrations and skills evaluations are complete, and opening-day ceremonies are scheduled for March 23 at 10 a.m. on the high-school turf field, with subsequent games at Roper. Parks & Rec said most fields will be active for practices and games through April and flagged scheduling difficulties due to high demand for field time and limited lighting for younger teams during evening hours.
Staff also noted a pilot 3-on-3 program for 11-12 girls that drew roughly 40 participants and used the high school gym to host games; that pilot will inform future program planning. Opening-day logistics will include live or prerecorded name announcements; staff asked commissioners to coordinate with Graham on that item.
No formal board action was taken; this was an informational update.
