Medina City Council's finance committee voted to revise Civil Service Rule 6(c)(5) so lateral police candidates receive the same physical fitness retest opportunity as entry-level officers. Committee members said the change brings city rules into alignment with recent state updates.
A staff representative explained the state now allows a second chance for candidates who fail the initial physical fitness test; without the proposed amendment, lateral hires previously were ineligible for that second attempt. "If you fail the PT test, that's it," the committee was told, describing the prior treatment of lateral candidates. The revision would permit a retest within two weeks of the initial test, the timeframe cited by staff.
Committee members and the civil service commission indicated support for the change; a motion to approve passed unanimously.
The committee characterized the change as administrative alignment rather than a policy shift. No further direction was taken beyond approving the rule language amendment, which the city will incorporate into civil service procedures.
