The Isanti City Council voted 5-0 to purchase two single-post cantilever shade structures for Rum River Meadows Park after discussing alternatives, sizing and siting.
Parks staff presented the request, noting the Parks & Recreation Board had recommended the structures and pointing to an existing similar unit at the community garden. The staff proposal called for two single-post pyramid cantilever shades roughly 10 feet by 10 feet with in-ground posts; staff said the quoted cost was about $6,000 per structure.
Several council members questioned the price and offered lower-cost alternatives. "You can get a shade that's actually bigger for $57," one councilmember said while describing off-the-shelf canopies. Other councilmembers argued the single-post cantilever design offers better accessibility and durability and recommended larger dimensions. Councilmembers discussed 10x10 canopies versus larger 13x19.5 options, snow-load and winter removal, post sizing and installation hardware; one member suggested bolt-through eye hardware to extend service life.
Councilman Lundin moved to approve purchase of two larger 13x19.5 single-post shade structures with 6x6 posts (with staff to finalize details); Councilman Merrill seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Council and staff also discussed moving locations to avoid the volleyball court and planting additional trees in parks as longer-term shade investments.
Staff will proceed with procurement and installation planning in coordination with the parks budget and public-works staff. Council did not set a strict spending cap during the meeting; staff noted installation costs and recommended specifications for posts and attachment hardware.
