Board debates reading anonymous letters; agrees to ask TSBA to draft policy

The board received another anonymous letter and discussed how to handle such communications. Board member (Speaker 2) noted the board had policies for personnel complaints and public comment but said another anonymous letter had appeared and the board should encourage members of the public to use existing channels to raise concerns.

Board member (Speaker 3) said the board is in a position where, "until we adopt the policy to address this," it might need to read the letter aloud, and urged the board to adopt a formal policy to address anonymous submissions. Other members said they preferred people come speak in public comment or contact their board representative directly.

The superintendent (Speaker 1) acknowledged questions in the letter about "the impact of my ability to lead," said he is willing to answer those questions and meet with parents, and encouraged direct contact by telephone or meetings. The board asked staff to follow up with TSBA to draft or amend a policy for anonymous letters; no formal vote was recorded.

The board characterized the topic as a governance and personnel-policy issue to be addressed through a drafted policy rather than ad-hoc reading of anonymous submissions.
