Senate committee adopts interim study to examine crypto‑mining’s health, water and noise impacts

The Senate Public Health, Welfare and Labor Committee unanimously adopted an interim study proposal to examine public health, environmental and permitting issues tied to digital asset (crypto) mining facilities.

Committee members said the study should examine continuous noise that can affect restorative sleep and hearing, local environmental permitting, and large water draws for cooling. "At last report, they were using 250,000 gallons a month," Senator King said, referring to a facility whose application had listed far lower water use. Lawmakers also noted concerns about power consumption and possible national‑security supply‑chain risks cited in national reporting.

Supporters of the ISP said the objective is to understand actual impacts, establish guardrails and enable continued investment with appropriate safeguards. Senator King said he plans an ISP that would require crypto operators to notify local jurisdictions and the Public Service Commission months in advance of planned facilities.

The committee adopted the ISP without objection and directed that the study be placed on a future agenda for deeper review of noise, water, permitting and community impacts.
