Committee raises military leave for first responders, citing equity for nonstandard schedules

Representative Wade Andrews explained HB 17 03 would increase paid military leave from 120 to 168 hours and permit officers and firefighters to bank leave for up to two years, aiming to make federal military leave equitable for personnel on 56‑hour or otherwise nonstandard schedules. "It just makes it equitable," said a Little Rock fire department speaker describing their 56‑hour workweek.

Committee members questioned whether the change might disincentivize hiring reservists or service members; witnesses and the sponsor said the change would more likely aid recruitment of military veterans into fire and police service. The committee then approved HB 17 03 by voice vote.

The measure will proceed from committee with a favorable recommendation.
