Members of the Economic Development Commission reviewed the city’s recent business‑awards event during the May 29 meeting, praising organizers for execution while noting a few presentation and logistics issues.
Commissioners said the event gave participants a “warm” reception and recognized staff and volunteers for their outreach, but several slides were missing from the commission’s presentation package and some award winners were surprised by speaking opportunities. Members discussed keeping at least three categories going forward — a People’s Choice award, a Commission’s Choice (or commissioner’s award) and a New Business category — and debated whether the commissioner’s pick should be a separate selection outside the public vote.
Staff and commissioners also discussed better timing for awards outreach to avoid coinciding with business‑license renewals and suggested expanding promotional timelines in the city newsletter and weekly electronic blasts. Commissioners suggested holding a future review of the nomination and selection timeline and asked staff to bring logistics recommendations to a later meeting. No formal decisions or votes were recorded.
