Lauren Clobherty, program coordinator for the state's Rhode Island 250 commission, told Exeter's town council she was visiting to ask the town to establish a local RI 250 committee to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026. "I'm here today to bring attention to this tremendous opportunity for each community," Clobherty said, offering a field guide and toolkits from the American Association for State and Local Histories.
Clobherty said the commission aims to "engage as many Rhode Islanders as possible" and collaborate with municipal groups to promote tourism and public participation. She described possible activities such as lecture series, exhibitions using state archives materials, and symbolic projects (tree plantings or a small installation). Clobherty also noted that the state commission can share examples and model resolutions other towns have used.
Council members asked practical questions about scope and timing. Clobherty said specifics are not yet set but mentioned a July 4 culmination and partnerships being discussed with groups such as Tall Ships America and WaterFire. The council suggested coordinating with the Exeter Historical Association and using the town's library green/open space for events. The deputy secretary of state, Rob Yock, was listed as joining the visit on behalf of the secretary's office.
The council asked Clobherty to leave printed materials and for the commission to send model resolutions and committee guidance to the town clerk. No formal vote was taken; members agreed to keep the item on future agendas for additional planning and potential formal action.
