Senate education committee advances changes to rural practice scholarship board appointments

The Senate Education Committee on Thursday voted to advance House Bill 19‑31, a measure that revises membership and appointment procedures for the Rural Practice Scholarship Medical Board.

Representative Bentley presented the bill, saying it is “a very, very simple bill amending the board membership on the rural practice scholarship medical board” and that the Attorney General’s office requested changes. She told the committee the measure provides Senate confirmation for governor board appointments, adds representation from rural parts of the state and for members serving underrepresented communities and the Delta population, and removes a death provision carried over from an earlier county match program change.

The bill’s sponsor said she had worked with affected parties and that there was no organized opposition on record. After brief questions, a member moved and seconded the motion to pass. The committee approved the bill by voice vote.

The committee did not take a roll-call for the item; the chair declared the motion adopted and congratulated the sponsor. The bill now moves forward per the committee's process.
