Committee adopts interim study on speech pathologists; schedules follow-ups on student safety and transfer eligibility

The committee adopted an interim study (ISP) to examine speech‑language pathologist staffing and related issues after Senator Elliott moved adoption and a member seconded the motion; the motion passed by voice vote.

Representative Leakes raised constituent concerns about students exhibiting violent behavior in schools — citing incidents including a teacher struck with a fire extinguisher — and asked whether the Department has reviewed disciplinary options or alternative placements. Staff said they would research the issue and return to the committee next month.

Committee leadership also announced a joint House‑Senate meeting on Thursday with the Arkansas Activities Association and an invited student to review transfer and athletic eligibility rules. The meeting will include Department of Education staff as appropriate.

The committee closed the session after scheduling the follow-up items.
