The Caledonia Community Schools Board of Education on May 20 tabled a package of NEOLA policy revisions after a heated discussion among members over language that would govern staff interactions with students on sensitive topics.
Board members spent more than an hour debating two alternate texts — the district attorney's recommended "Option 1" and a district-edited "Option 2" — that differ in how they describe permissible counseling and assistance. Tim, a board member, moved to adopt Option 2, arguing the district-edited version "best represents" parental rights and avoids conflict with state law. Another board member said the district-edited language risks leaving staff in a vague position and asked whether it could expose teachers to discipline. Several board members pressed for clarity on whether providing informational materials, links or other resources could be interpreted as prohibited "assistance."
"Parents are responsible for their children's medical well-being," Tim said during the discussion. "I don't want this policy to conflict against law," he added, urging an option that defers to parental decision-making.
Opponents of the amendment expressed concern that Option 2 still left unanswered questions about what constitutes assistance, and they repeatedly asked whether the policy would prevent staff from giving students safe, factual information. One board member said that vulnerable students sometimes seek trusted adults at school when home is not a safe option and asked what resources the district would provide if the policy restricts staff conversations.
The amendment to adopt Option 2 was moved and seconded but failed on roll call. Following the failed amendment, a motion to table the NEOLA policy action carried, meaning the board will revisit the item at a later meeting after additional review and potential redrafting. The board president said the item would be discussed again at the June 4 workshop and carried forward to a regular meeting if needed.
