At the MSAD 51 public hearing on the budget April 1, teachers and students urged the board to reconsider a planned reduction of one high‑school science position that would result from natural attrition following a retirement.
Science teacher Andrew Baca told the board he is "concerned" that the loss of the position will reduce lab time, electives and hands‑on experiences (such as the science fair) and will increase class sizes. Student speakers added that AP Biology sections could disappear if staffing is reduced; one student said AP Bio may be unavailable next year and that some students may pursue courses at the University of Southern Maine as a result.
Administration explanation: the superintendent and director of finance said the budget reductions were guided by two criteria: (1) a fall 2023 review of class sizes (enrollment at Greeley High had declined and class sizes are presently low in several areas) and (2) a policy to use attrition to avoid layoffs. The superintendent said that if enrollment increases or additional vacancies occur, the district would re-evaluate staffing and add positions as needed.
Budget uncertainty: district staff flagged one remaining unknown — forthcoming health‑insurance-rate notifications — that could alter the budget; preliminary ranges were given (1.5%–11.5%); each 1% move in the insurance rate was estimated to represent roughly $63,000 in district cost.
What the board will do next: administration said minor adjustments may be made by April 22 when the board adopts the warrant/budget; the finance chair and administration will present updated financing and mill‑rate projections before the vote.
