On Feb. 9 the Utah Senate observed a time‑certain presentation and passed Senate Joint Resolution 9, a ceremonial measure honoring Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) cultures and communities in Utah.
Senator Kwan presented the resolution and provided historical remarks citing early Pacific Islander settlement patterns in Utah and noting the state’s NHPI population. "Utah is home to over 59,000 residents of Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander descent," she said while explaining the resolution’s purpose to recognize cultural contributions and community leadership.
The chamber rose to recognize community members in the gallery and the resolution was moved to passage; a roll call recorded 22 yeas, 0 nays and 7 absences, and the resolution will be transmitted to the House for consideration.
The Senate also acknowledged related cultural events on the Hill, including an invited lion dance in the Rotunda scheduled immediately following floor time.
What’s next: SJR 9 will be sent to the House for further consideration and sponsors encouraged continued legislative engagement with NHPI community organizations.
