Utah Senate Unanimously Confirms Diana Hagen as State Supreme Court Justice

The Utah Senate on a roll call vote consented to Governor Spencer J. Cox’s appointment of Diana Hagen as a Justice of the Utah Supreme Court, President J. Stewart Adams announced after recording 25 “yay” votes, zero nays and four absences.

Senator Wyler told the chamber that confirmation committees had met with Judge Hagen extensively, reviewed many of her written opinions from the Utah Court of Appeals and unanimously recommended her confirmation. Wyler moved that the Senate confirm her. The Senate then resolved into a Committee of the Whole to hear from Hagen and later dissolved the committee.

In remarks to the Senate, Justice Hagen thanked family members and colleagues and recalled her appellate experience, including service as appellate chief in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Utah and five years on the Utah Court of Appeals. She said judges cannot make promises beyond a pledge to perform judicial duties faithfully, impartially and diligently and pledged to apply the law fairly and consistently.

President Adams presided over the proceedings. The Senate’s affirmative vote completed the constitutional confirmation process described in the governor’s proclamation and the communications read into the record by the secretary of the Senate.
