Utah Senate unanimously confirms Craig Hall as Second District judge

The Utah Senate on an extraordinary September 2021 session consented to Governor Spencer J. Cox’s appointment of Craig Hall to the Second District Court, recording 27 ayes, 0 nays and 2 absences on a roll call vote.

The session convened after the governor’s proclamation that the Senate meet to consider appointments made since the close of the 2021 general session. The Senate Judicial Confirmation Committee had met earlier and, according to Senator Wyler, voted unanimously to recommend Hall’s confirmation.

Senators who spoke in support described Hall as a longtime public servant with legal experience and a record of community involvement. Senator Andreeg said he knew Hall from the House and called him “a man of integrity and honor.” Senator Riebe, who described a family connection, and Senator Bridal and Senator McCall each offered personal endorsements.

After the confirmation, the Senate resolved to a Committee of the Whole so Hall could address members. In his remarks, Hall thanked his family, the judicial nominating commission and the governor’s staff, and pledged to “apply the law as it is written without regard to any personal policy preference.” He also noted his legislative service beginning in 2013.

The Senate returned to regular order, completed remaining gubernatorial communications and adjourned. The confirmation completes the Senate’s consent step for the appointment; the transcript records the consent vote and Hall’s remarks but does not specify an oath or the exact date he will formally begin judicial duties.
