Senate adopts resolution condemning anti-Asian hate, honors Asian American and Pacific Islander communities

The Utah Senate unanimously adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 101 honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, condemning anti-Asian hate and encouraging education and solidarity.

Senator Iwamoto introduced the resolution and asked the reading clerk to recite the document's whereas clauses, which cite Census estimates and note that Asian American and Pacific Islander communities include more than 56 ethnic groups and speak more than 100 languages. The reading included reference to the state’s Topaz Museum and Education Center and recognized May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Invited guests and senators addressed the chamber. Senator Escamilla urged the Legislature to stand against hatred and highlighted recent painful incidents affecting AAPI communities. Senator Iwamoto referenced a series of local conversations and a governor-led meeting with community members, saying outreach across rural and urban areas illustrated the resolution’s importance. Several senators offered personal testimony; Senator Vickers rose to explain an aye vote and described private conversations and community concerns. Senator Wyler shared an anecdote about a longtime friend’s experiences to underscore the reality of microaggressions in Utah.

Senator Iwamoto moved the resolution; the Senate adopted it by roll call vote with 27 ayes and no nays (2 absent). The resolution will be transmitted to the House for further consideration.
