The Stratford Town Council on May 13 approved multiple contracts and change orders for school and infrastructure work, including two awards to Window Services Inc. for window refurbishments at Lordship School and Stratford Academy/Johnson House.
The council approved a $10,566.07 contract for Lordship School and a $40,120.95 contract for Stratford Academy/Johnson House. Councilmember Llewellyn noted the decisions to refurbish windows rather than replace them have produced “a tremendous amount of savings,” saying initial budgets for replacements had been as high as $1,000,000 for a single school and that projected replacement costs were previously estimated near $3,000,000. The council thanked public-works staff for proposing refurbishments.
Why it matters: the council emphasized that choosing refurbishment over full replacement reduced projected capital costs for local schools and preserves budget capacity for other projects.
Other related actions at the meeting included approval of a $31,514 change order for the Fairy Creek pump station renovation and an $18,000 amendment for phases 1 and 2 of the Bruce Brook Improvement Project. Each of those motions was approved by the council by voice vote.
The contracts were awarded through the town’s building-needs process and were seconded and approved without further amendment at the meeting. Staff and councilmembers said the refurbishment approach is now being applied to multiple schools in the district.
