Mayor Laura R. Hordick used her report to outline community events, public-health services, economic-development milestones and a series of capital projects that the council then approved or authorized.
The mayor announced Martin Luther King Jr. Day events on Jan. 15 and encouraged residents to RSVP for community panels and breakfasts. She also said the health department would run Tuesday flu clinics through January (dates listed) and noted participation in a regional tabletop exercise to plan volunteer reception centers for large-scale incidents.
On economic development, the mayor said the town will meet with the developer Point Stratford Renewal for an update on conveyance and the environmental services cooperative agreement with the U.S. Army; simultaneous upland and mudflat remediation could shorten the project timeframe to roughly two years once conveyance occurs.
The mayor also noted multiple Sikorsky contracts that will involve work in Stratford. As read at the meeting: “Sikorsky contracted the US Marine Corps for more than a hundred and $68,000,000 on December 15 to purchase materials needed to build 21 new ... aircraft,” she said, and added that a high share of the work will take place in Stratford with completion dates into 2024–2026.
On capital projects and grants, the council approved two grant-authorizing resolutions and several CIP-funded playground and park projects during the meeting. Actions included:
- Resolution 6.2.0.1: Authorized application to Fairfield County Community Foundation to support the South End Community Center leadership-training program (approved unanimously).
- Resolution 6.2.0.2: Authorized a joint application with Bridgeport to CT DECD’s Round 4 Community Investment Fund for the CT‑130/Stratford Avenue corridor project; the amount read aloud during the meeting was unclear on the transcript; the council approved the application unanimously.
- Chapel School Playground: Contract under CT contract #17PSX0081 for $220,314 (approved unanimously).
- Lyric Park Playground: Contract under CT contract #17PSX0081 for $123,049 (approved unanimously).
- George Force Park court refurbishment: $452,490 from FY24 CIP bond funds (approved unanimously).
The mayor also read a long slate of reappointments and commission appointments; the council later confirmed the full mayoral slate by roll call (6-4) after some clarifying questions.
The council approved a payment of $1,400 to Sustainable Engineering Solutions Inc. for Stratford High School project work. Several other commercial and construction updates were included in the mayor's report and are noted in the meeting record.
The mayor provided contact information for constituent services and encouraged council members and residents to schedule department tours.
