Senate approves Medicaid-waiver bill to expand recreational therapy coverage

The Utah Senate on Feb. 23 approved first substitute House Bill 315, which directs the Utah Department of Health and Human Services to apply for a Medicaid waiver to expand coverage of recreational therapy services.

Sen. Curtis S. Bramble, who presented the bill, said the measure would require the department to seek the waiver and that he was open to questions. No senators asked questions on the floor. The clerk recorded 23 ayes, 0 nays and 6 absentees; the bill passed the Senate and will be returned to the House for the Speaker’s signature.

Supporters said the change would allow Medicaid recipients access to therapeutic services that can support physical and mental health. The sponsor moved the measure and waived summation before the roll call.

Next steps: The bill will be signed by the President and transmitted to the House for the Speaker's signature and final action.
